We are very excited to announce that over the summer 2020 Oxford VegSoc launched its first digital zine with the wonderful title THAT PLANT LIFE! We really wanted to try something new and fun to connect the plant-based community in Oxford and to get you guys involved and we thought that a collective zine would be the best format for that.

WHAT IS A ZINE? 

 

The word “zine” is short for magazine and describes a magazine-like publication that is often self-published. The history of the zine goes way back to the 1930s. It was especially popular among minority groups who used the format to exchange on and publish their reflections about society, their role in it and the changes and reforms necessary to make it more just. However, zines need not always have a political or social dimension. The format is also widely used among fandoms to present the creative productions of the fans.

Originally hand-made and photocopied, digital zines have become more widespread today. Nonetheless, the content has remained the same: creative contributions of all shape and form with no restrictions on the design, materials, colours etc.

What is great about zines is that they allow for diversity while bringing together enthusiastic people who share the same passion. With That Plant Life we would like to do exactly that: connect the plant-based community in Oxford! That is why we are inviting you to send us your personal contribution.
